Most so-called tiny homes today are anything but, with some models offering the floor space of a city apartment, Chipper, however, embraces the modest roots of the tiny living movement with an affordable and compact model designed to allow two people to live comfortably.
The Chipper from Häuslein Tiny House Co. is based on a double-axle trailer and is just 5 m (16.4 ft) long, which is certainly on the small side for a tiny house and even smaller than the recent Hytta from Baluchon, for example. It is clad in steel and thermally treated wood. The interior is accessed via a glass sliding door and features oak flooring and birch plywood walls, has a floor space of just 12.5 m2 (almost 135 sq ft) and is all arranged on a single floor.
The entrance opens into the light-filled living/sleeping area, which looks compact thanks to its generous glass and strategically placed strip lighting. There’s a small sofa with a bed on it, some storage space, and a TV mounted on the opposite wall.
Nearby is the kitchen. This is smaller than Häuslein Tiny House Co.'s other latest model, the GrandHaus, but offers a good amount of storage, a sink and induction hob, plus space for an optional dishwasher, refrigerator, oven and washer/dryer.

Chipper’s bathroom is directly off the kitchen and is accessed via a sliding door. It comes standard with a shower, a small vanity sink and a flush toilet, plus a bit more storage.
The tiny house has some optional upgrades, including appliances and furniture options. It’s powered by a caravan-style hookup as standard, but those serious about embracing the nomadic lifestyle can go off-grid with a solar panel installation, plus water tanks and a composting toilet.
The starting price for this model is AU$79,090 (about US$51,000).
