Swen Vincke, CEO of Larian Studios, said he was worried that Baldur's Gate 3 might be too small because so much planned content had been canceled.
In a new video interview with BAFTA, Vincke – who also directed the game – said that the original plan was to make the game even bigger, but those plans were initially scaled back.
“This is really random information, but Moonrise Towers used to consist of two towers,” Vincke explained. “And now we've only delivered one tower. And for a long time there were actually the ruins of the second tower, and then we removed that too.”
“So there was only one tower, but originally we had planned for two towers. The reason we removed the extra tower was purely for production reasons. The game just got too big and so we had to cut it out.
Vincke laughed and admitted that Baldur's Gate 3 was ultimately “a really, really big game.” But he also revealed that the game was supposed to have more locations that were ultimately cut, which made him concerned about the game's length.
“You would be surprised to know that we actually wanted to create many more regions,” he said.
“I was originally worried that the game would be too short, but I've always been very bad at judging the length of our games.”
Any players hoping that the removed content will be added to the game at some point will likely be disappointed, as Larian has already confirmed that it has said goodbye to Baldur's Gate 3 and is now focusing on two new projects based on its own IPs.
“Baldur's Gate will always have a warm place in our hearts,” Vincke said in March. “We will forever be proud of it, but we will not stay there any longer.”
“We're not going to make new expansions like everyone expects. We're not going to make Baldur's Gate 4 like everyone expects us to. We're going to move on. We're going to move away from D&D and start doing something new.”
