Best March 7 (The Hunt) Production for Honkai: Star Rail

The ridiculously named March 7th became the poster child for this Honkai: Star Ray has been free to play since the game was released, and now there's a new version of him that plays as a DPS. The recent 2.4 update gave him a new Path to take, just like the main character The Trailblazer. What's great here is that he's a Ghost Hunt character with surprising flexibility. Even better news: you don't need to support him on a banner—he's completely free!

March 7—named for the day she woke up with no memory of anything—has a new ability that’s a key component of her playstyle: marking a chosen ally as her Shifu. Every attack Shifu makes, including follow-ups and counters, grants March 7 a charge point. Reaching at least seven points grants her an immediate action with an improved basic attack. Additionally, the ally’s path will determine whether March 7’s Base ATK deals additional DMG or increased Stamina Reduction. I’ll cover how to unlock this highly skilled warrior and how to build the best builds.

How to unlock March 7 (The Hunt)

Obtaining this character can be a bit confusing due to the limited-time event revolving around him. I want to emphasize that you can only unlock the character by progressing through the story and completing the Trailblaze Continuance quest “March to Mastery: A Star is Born.”

Although the Saga of Primaveral Blade event in version 2.4 revolves around the tutorial on March 7th, and those who haven't progressed too far in the story can play early, this won't unlock it. The event only features a fun minigame with the character and some great limited-time rewards. Every player, early access or not, will still need to complete the event to unlock free Eidolons for him.

The biggest advantage that March 7 (Hunt) has is her ability to adapt. I would argue that she might be the most versatile character we can get for free. Honkai: Star RayPrimary roles should revolve around Breaking Damage or Critical Rate Damage, although you want to pair her with at least one character who can consistently attack.

If you want to focus on Break Effects and Break DMG you should use Trailblazer (Imaginary) and/or Ruan Mei. Both are great boosts to provide all the necessary buffs for Break. The first will be the most accessible as it is unlocked for free.

Building March 7's offense is a major responsibility for his Shifu, so characters who can counterattack are a good fit. Yunli and Clara can give great performances in this role. The former can counterattack more consistently, while the latter can force enemies to attack him.

Most Healer or Support characters will work, but Lynx and Gallagher are the best options. Lynx works particularly well with Yunli or Clara, as both can activate the second part of her skill that draws enemies towards her. Gallagher, on the other hand, can deal powerful damage and the Besotted status she inflicts on enemies will result in more Break DMG.

Best March 7 (The Hunt) Light Cones

A card called River Flows in Spring appears on the Cone of Light screen.

As a 4-star character who isn’t even part of a flag, March 7th (The Hunt) doesn’t have the associated Cones of Light to act as a perfect match. Luckily, there are plenty of great Cones of Light that can be given to him.

If you're worried about CRIT DMG, In The Night and Baptism Of Pure Thought are the top two five-star options. The former is potentially a better option as it can also boost Basic ATK DMG. A more accessible free-to-play option is Cruising In The Stellar Sea, which can be purchased from Herta's Store.

Any of the Cones of Light above should work well with any build for March 7 (The Hunt), but The best option to improve Break DMG would be the five-star Sailing Towards A Second Life. Even at the basic Overlap level, it will increase the Break Effect by a phenomenal 60% among many other buffs. If you missed pulling this, River Flows in Spring It's a great alternative to purchase from Forgotten Hall's Light Cone Store. The buffs it provides will remain in play as long as the wearer doesn't take damage.

Which Traces Should Be Prioritized?

Aside from the basic flexibility of March 7th (The Hunt), the character’s potential is further unlocked with the right tracks. No matter what kind of build you’re trying to achieve, here’s what you should focus on first:

  • Watermark – This is a must-have when it comes to traces and bonus abilities. Watermark allows March 7th to reduce the durability of enemies with the same Weakness Type as the chosen Shifu. Additionally, managing to create a Weakness Break will trigger it as a Phantom Weakness Break
  • My Sword Zaps Demons – Since his skill is purely support, you’ll be using his Basic Attack the most in battle. It’s important to upgrade this as much as possible
  • Tide Tamer – This bonus ability is activated after using Enhanced Basic Attack. The selected Shifu's CRIT DMG is increased by 60% and Break Effect is increased by 36%.

Best March 7 (The Hunt) Relic Sets

While Light Cones is ideally paired with March 7, there are some options that can work no matter what build you’re using. Certain effects from Relic sets are much more suited to certain character builds. Below are the best Relic and Ornament Sets to use if you want a Break DPS build. Firefly will likely recognize these options.

  • Iron Cavalry Against The Scourge is arguably the best choice. The Break Effect increase is solid, but the potential to partially ignore enemy DEF can make a big difference if the Break Effect value is high enough.
  • Your next best option is to go for Thief Of Shooting Meteor. A maximum Break Effect increase of 32% can be a big help on a Fantasy character like March 7th (The Hunt).
  • A Planar Ornament set that pairs well with the above is Talia: Kingdom Of Banditry. The base 16% Break Effect increase is the same as Iron Cavalry, but the additional 20% will be very noticeable if the SPD stat reaches 145.

A DPS or CRIT DPS build is best equipped with something different. The following sets will provide great DMG and CRIT related buffs.

  • Wild Wheat Gunner can be found everywhere Honkai: Star Rayand thankfully the best relic set for this purpose. The four-piece effect is particularly useful because of how often you'll be using its Basic Attack
  • Wastelander Of Banditry Desert is a great alternative relic set. The CRIT Rate and Crit DMG buffs vary depending on the situation, but the Filigree trail can increase the chance of them occurring
  • Rutilant Arena is the best Planar Ornament set to pair with any of the above. It increases CRIT Rate by 8% and can increase Basic ATK damage by 20% if CRIT Rate is increased enough.

March 7 (The Hunt) might be one of the most damage-hitting characters you can unlock for free. I was a fan of the original Preservation version, but I'm having a lot more fun with this new one. This character's flexibility will make her a powerful addition to any character. Honkai: Star Ray teams of players.
