Best Upgrades for Soh in Kunitsu-Gami: Path Of The Goddess

Your first few hours Kunitsu-Gami: The Way of the Goddess Your time will be spent finding the balance between commanding villagers and personally battling evil spirits known as Seethe by controlling Maiden Yoshiro's masked guardian, Soh. Upgrading villagers with new skills and buffs is a must, but it won't be long before you can upgrade Soh too.

When upgrading Soh's skills, one major difference compared to upgrading villagers is that there are many more abilities, and it's not a linear process. Soh's upgrade screen is presented as a circle divided into five sections, and you can pick and choose however you want, except for two of them, which require prerequisite skills to access. This makes it easy to create a preferred playstyle, but some upgrades stand out more than others. Here's what you need to know.

When Do Soh's Upgrades Unlock?

Once you defeat Batsu you will be able to start leveling up Sohthe fifth boss (maybe sixth if we consider Enri Village) and the eleventh stage. You'll probably recognize this monster as the one that gives you a cheap shot and takes some of your powers in the prologue cutscene. In addition to unlocking the spearman villager and getting some sweet revenge, Soh's mask will also appear in the upgrade screen after you kill Batsu. From this point on, you can dispel any Musubi to unlock Soh's upgrades.

Best Archery Skills to Develop

Some whirlwind fighting action.

Whether they're flying or just plain dangerous, some enemies are hard to fight with just melee attacks. Leaving them to Archers and eventually other ranged units isn't always the most reliable solution either. This is what makes Soh's archery abilities a must-have for anyone playing Kunitsu-Gami: The Way of the Goddess.

  • Archery – Allows Soh to use a bow. This is the prerequisite skill to unlock the others, and just having access to the bow provides a huge advantage.
  • Butterfly Shot – Charging the bow before firing will teleport Soh to an enemy that has been hit. In addition to being a great way to track down flying enemies, later stages will include targets in areas that are normally inaccessible. Equipping this ability will give you access to hard-to-find chests or even some dirt that needs to be purified.
  • Peak Shot – Charging the bow before firing will fire an arrow that deals heavy damage to the enemy's health and resistance gauge. Between the powerful knockback and heavy damage it does against smaller enemies, this is one of my favorite abilities, and I highly recommend giving it a shot if you have trouble stunning flying or more durable enemies.

Best Command Screen Skills to Upgrade

I wouldn’t blame you for thinking the Command Screen is a bit primitive. Managing villagers individually can be a chore, and having a menu just to move them around feels pretty basic. Thankfully, most of the abilities in the Command Screen section add some nice features that are worth investing in. Strangely, two of them have nothing to do with the Command Screen, but they’re both important additions for any playstyle.

  • Gather – Every villager can be summoned to the same place. This is a purely quality of life upgrade, but it's worth it as you channel more and more villagers.
  • Yoshiro's Guide – Yoshiro can be commanded to stop or keep moving from the command screen. By default, you can only give this command when you're physically near Yoshiro. Considering how hectic your day can get, this is a great productivity upgrade.
  • Tsuba Guard Slot Increase – Opens an extra Tsuba Guard Slot. An additional slot can be unlocked at a higher Musubi cost. Being able to use all three Tsuba Guardian abilities together is a game-changer considering how diverse they all are.
  • Mazo Talisman Slot Increase – Unlocks an extra Mazo Talisman Slot. Two more slots can be unlocked with higher Musubi costs. There are over 70 Talismans to discover, and their buffs cover a lot of different aspects. I recommend fully upgrading this one so you can rock with five talismans.

Best Dance Attack Skills to Develop

We choose new forms for Soh.

The bottom two sections of Soh's upgrade screen cover two different fighting styles: Oka Dance and Shiden Dance. The first is the default style you use from the start, allowing you to move freely during attacks, while the second sacrifices movement for more power. Only one style can be used at a time.

When comparing Oka Dance to Shiden Dance, it ultimately comes down to preference. On my first run, I enjoyed the free-flowing nature of the default style. Kunitsu-Gami: The Way of the GoddessBut Shiden is pretty impressive against bosses. The upgrades for both styles add a combo finisher that simply reduces your resistance gauge when you hold down the Dance Attack button. Again, this is optional, but the following felt most useful:

  • Oka Form 2 – Soh only has one upward slash that can hit flying enemies, and that adds to her resistance gauge damage. If you hate dealing with Seethe in the air as much as I do, spend a meager five Musubi on this one.
  • Oka Form 4 – While it has the longest attack string to activate and is the most chaotic to control, this is one of my favorite abilities. Its long range makes it ideal for hitting multiple enemies and dodging attacks.
  • Shiden Form 1 – Unlike Oka Forms, each Shiden Form ability ends with the same attack. I recommend the first form ability so that you can unleash this powerful move as soon as possible.

Best of Soh's Other Upgradeable Abilities

Lastly, but certainly not least, are what are considered Soh's “Other Abilities.” A much better way to describe them is his Battle Abilities, as that's what they all revolve around. Each one adds unique functionality to Soh's gameplay, but two are exceptionally powerful.

  • Worship – Chozusha Basins can be used at night, empowering Soh and making him invincible for a short time. Take advantage of this to fight against Seethe hordes or a boss without worrying about taking damage. It is a great source of leverage that can easily turn the tide of any fight.
  • Punishing Attack – Soh can use a powerful attack against enemies with a depleted Resistance Gauge. This essentially acts as a finishing move on most non-boss enemies. It still does a ton of damage for everyone else.
