Most 3D printed homes are currently set to be single storey, which can obviously be a bit restrictive. However, an upcoming project in the Netherlands suggests that this may not be the case for long, as it will build new homes that can go up to three storeys high, showcasing the increasing complexity of 3D printed architecture.
Back in 2021, we reported on the Netherlands’ first 3D-printed home , modelled after a boulder. The same team is behind these new homes, created under the name Project Milestone, which will again be designed as livable boulders to suit their woodland surroundings in Boschuil, Eindhoven.
It’s worth noting that we’ve seen 3D-printed homes with multiple floors before, but they’re rare. One example consisted of a concrete shell with a wooden frame on top, while another was a two-story prototype home built for research.
There will be a total of four homes for the project Milestone, split into two models. The first will consist of three floors and a total floor area of 127 square metres (roughly 1,370 sq ft), while the second will be two floors and have an area of 114 square metres (roughly 1,230 sq ft). All will have three bedrooms and are designed for families of up to four people.
The houses will be printed in sections at a nearby factory. To create the sections, a 3D printer will extrude a cement-like mixture through a nozzle in layers to create the basic shapes, which will then be transported to the site and assembled by human builders. Humans will also be tasked with finishing the interiors, doors, roofs, and anything else needed.
The 3D-printed homes are up for sale and cost between €570,000 and €655,000 (approximately $630,000 to $730,000 USD). Construction is set to begin in early 2025, with completion expected in mid-2025.
