Striking Distance Studios has confirmed that its roguelike spin-off Callisto Protocol, Redacted, will be released on October 31 for Xbox Series X|S, PS5 and PC.
Redacted, formerly known as Project Birdseye, is an action roguelike game set in the same universe as the 2022 survival horror game that Striking Distance says a small team is working on in parallel with its next full-fledged game.
“Redacted takes you deep into the Black Iron Prison, a state-of-the-art correctional facility on Jupiter’s icy moon Callisto,” says a description of the game.
“Inmates are infected and mutating, security systems are acting indiscriminately, and other survivors are trying to escape by any means possible.
“And although you're just a simple guard with a single job – making it to the last escape pod alive – you have an arsenal of weapons, suits, abilities, experiments and more to help you escape Black Iron Prison alive.”
Striking Distance says Redacted is all about “fighting, dying, dying again, dying some more, and adapting, taking the classic roguelike formula and pushing it to the extreme.”
According to the developer, the game includes all the “greatest hits” of the roguelike genre, such as unlimited replayability, strategic build metas, progression through death, powerful upgrades, and speedrunning challenges.
“But don't worry, we've brought in a few new ideas to ensure every run is a little different,” an announcement continues, detailing the following features:
- ACCESSIBLE ACTION: Black Iron Prison is your playground. Arm yourself with a mix of firearms, melee weapons, abilities and upgrades. The game is intuitive to play, but mastering it is a whole other story. Fight your way through waves of monstrosities to reach the final escape pod and feel the rush of survival and the pain of each death.
- Rivals: The infected inmates and monsters in Black Iron Prison are bad enough, but you'll have to watch out for other survivors trying to escape. They're gunning for the last escape pod and can be a real pain in the ass, throwing unexpected challenges your way or trying to take you out head-on.
- FIGHT YOUR LAST CORPSE: Let's face it, you're going to die. Don't think about it too long. Instead, find your last corpse and finish it off to get a high-level experiment from your previous run. But don't take the fight lightly. The corpse you fight has the same weapons, upgrades, suits, and experiments as your previous run – the stronger you were, the stronger it is.
