What platforms are there? Cat Mission 3 suitable for?
Cat Mission 3 It'll be available on August 8 for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Windows. It runs flawlessly on Steam Deck, where I spend most of my time. Cat Mission 3 It's also better experienced with a gamepad and, in my opinion, is excellent as a portable game, as evidenced by my time on the Steam Deck.
In the time I spent about five hours Cat Mission 3I had a lot of fun. While the repetitive music can be a bit annoying, the core combat and gameplay loop are insanely satisfying. Once I got the hang of it and learned how to dodge effectively and build a solid build, I quickly got the hang of sailing the Purribean seas in search of new gear and engaging in more engaging fights. And while the story is mostly light-hearted fun, it does prove to be somewhat engaging once I learn exactly who my cat is and what my spirit pirate friend is up to in the game's lore.
You will fight a lot Cat Mission 3so it's a good thing that the combat here is so much fun. You can switch between your melee and ranged weapon with the press of a button. While there is ammo for your ranged weapons, it recharges over time, so you don't have to worry about keeping track of it. The same goes for your magical resource, mana. Different items will increase how quickly mana and ammo recharge, and even provide new ways to fight, like the ability to roll towards enemies and deal damage.
And don't let the game's cuteness fool you; the combat here is not without its challenges. At first, you'll be faced with enemies all over the world who punch harder than you, take far more damage, and often outnumber you. Thankfully, you can equip yourself with new weapons and spells to deal with the new threats, and thankfully, there's more to defeating your opponents than just increasing their power numbers. The new equipment, and especially the spells, shake up the game in truly satisfying ways.
Take spells, for example. I have two that I'm currently digging: a fireball that deals limited lasting damage, and the ability to create ice shards on the ground that both damage and slow enemies. The last bit is particularly great for dealing with groups of enemies, as I can slow them down to target specific enemies. These different spells can also combine in some satisfying ways: I can slow an opponent with my ice spell, which deals damage. Then I can follow up with a fireball that deals lasting damage. Since they're both slowed by the ice and damaged by the fireball, I can unload my flintlock pistol on them, then switch back to my melee spell, which refills my mana with each hit thanks to an item I've equipped.
This combination of spells and equipment can lead to some very satisfying techniques that you can use against groups of enemies or in one-on-one showdowns. And since finding a new item, spell, or weapon can add to your arsenal of attacks, the game provides a great forward momentum to get out there, explore, loot, and power up. And it's all brought to life with great sound effects and wonderfully entertaining animations that often seem as silly and entertaining as watching animals playfight.
However, what I found unsatisfying early on was the ship combat. While I could get stronger quickly with my swords, guns, and spells, ship upgrades proved to be more challenging. I think this was somewhat intentional, as your ship is required to cross the ocean to other islands, and so a weaker ship allows you to focus on the earlier areas rather than allowing you to get to the tougher battles before you’re ready (you can swim in a life jacket, but you’ll get chewed up by enemy ships pretty quickly and there’s no way to fight back). I also found the ship’s cannons a bit difficult to fire accurately. So far I’ve come away from most ship battles feeling pretty beat up. The fact that I’m already pretty strong on land but still weak in the water makes the game feel a bit unbalanced, so I hope to find some new upgrades for my ship soon.
Cat Mission 3 It's got some great visual flair too. With a vibrant, cheerful and varied colour palette mixing things up across Purribean's different areas, the whole experience really comes to life on the Steam Deck OLED, and it's all presented with a generous draw distance that gives an excellent sense of scale.
This music is a bit challenging though
Unfortunately, despite the game's many charms, the music dulled my desire to spend more time with it. Cat Mission 3. Don't get me wrong, the production value is excellent… it's just that listening to pirate ship themed music for long periods of time really got me tired. I was so happy when I came across a dungeon or something to change up the soundtrack. Unfortunately, the difficulty of the combat forces you to spend some of your time on gentle grinding (which is rarely the case like (which is tough considering how fun the combat is) you'll be subjected to the same pirate tunes over and over again.
To be fair to the song, it does its best to mix things up even in the homeworld area, but after a few hours I found this music stuck in my head as I went about my daily business. As someone who can find these kinds of weird melodies annoying, having these playing over and over in my head wasn't great. It's the only thing that makes me hesitant to skip it again (and I might turn the music volume down a bit when I do).
Cat Mission 3 is a cheerful, funny, and satisfying way to spend time as a cute little cat pirate. Despite my allergic reaction to the music, I look forward to returning to upgrade my equipment, learn new spells, and continue my quest for the mysterious Treasure of the North Star.
