It has been revealed that enhanced editions of Doom and Doom 2 are on the way.
Ahead of a likely announcement at Quakecon starting today, X user Wario64 has discovered a Steam listing for the new enhanced editions.
Both games will apparently be included in one package and will include Doom, Doom 2, a new Deathmatch pack with 25 maps and six bonus episodes:
- TNT: Evilition
- The Plutonia Experiment
- Master Levels for Doom 2
- No rest for the living
- seal
- Legacy of Rust
The last of these, Legacy of Rust, is a brand new episode created by members of id Software, Nightdive Studios, and MachineGames.
According to the Steam listing, the new enhanced editions of the games will run on the KEX engine, which is used by the recently released remasters of Doom 64, Quake and Quake 2.
This results in native 16:9 support and 60 frames per second when playing at 1080p on all platforms and up to 120 frames per second at 4K on some hardware.
Players can also choose between the original soundtrack and a newly arranged soundtrack by Andrew Hulshult, who composed the music for Brutal Doom and worked on the music for the Ancient Gods expansion for Doom Eternal.
The new edition also supports cross-platform multiplayer for up to 16 players in both deathmatch and co-op modes.
At the time of writing, the new, improved versions of Doom and Doom 2 have not been officially announced, so their release date is unknown. However, with them available on Steam and likely to be announced during Quakecon, a release doesn't seem to be far off.
