The Epic Games Store launches on mobile today. The store will be available on iOS in the EU and on Android worldwide.
The store will launch with three games – Fortnite, Fall Guys Mobile, and Rocket League Sidewipe. Fall Guys will allow cross-platform play and progression with the PC and console versions of the game.
Epic CEO Tim Sweeney told Game File: “If we've spent a billion dollars so far, that's a small price to pay for the future freedom of our company and everyone else who wants to participate in the market.”
All three games launching today on the Epic Games Store will also be available on the AltStore, a standalone mobile store that can also be accessed on iOS.
During a press conference, Sweeney also said (via GamesIndustry.biz): “[Apple and Google] are making great efforts to slow us down and have tried to stop us on several occasions. However, the European Commission has always intervened and allowed competitors to enter the market, which is what we are doing now.”
Although the store is not currently available for iOS in the UK, Epic Games Store General Manager Steve Allison said he hopes to expand the store to all regions in the coming months.
“In the next few years, we hope to be available on iOS worldwide,” he said. “And we continue to work with alternative stores around the world that offer great conditions for developers.”
