Despite a relatively quiet three-month period, the PlayStation 5 has now sold over 61 million units.
In Sony's latest financial results for the first quarter of fiscal 2024 (the period from April 1 to June 30), the company reported selling 2.4 million PS5 consoles.
While this is a decrease from the 3.3 million PS5 consoles sold in the first quarter of last year, the total number of PS5 sales to date is still 61.7 million.
The results for Sony's gaming division were overall positive: revenues in the Games & Network Services segment increased 12% year-on-year in the first quarter and operating profit increased 32% (from ¥49.2 billion/$335 million to ¥65.2 billion/$443 million).
In its summary, Sony attributes the year-on-year increase to the impact of exchange rates, the increase in sales of first-party gaming software titles and the “increase in revenue from network services, mainly PlayStation Plus.”
However, the company admits a “decline in hardware sales due to lower unit volumes.”
As a result of the Q1 figures, Sony has revised upward its forecast for the gaming division for the 2024 fiscal year (April 2024 – March 2025) and revised its revenue and operating profit forecast upward by 3%.
