M. Night Shyamalan's latest film, Traptakes place mostly during a pop star's concert, which is definitely a unique gimmick. Crowds of screaming girls, booming music, and shuffling crowds create a tense and unnerving atmosphere as Josh Hartnett's character (a father who is secretly a serial killer) tries to escape and find a way to escape from the cops who are watching the scene. While Shyamalan's films often require suspension of disbelief (why are the aliens Signs (Who has the weakness to invade a planet covered with water?), Trap introduces us to a truly bizarre concert that could never exist in real life.
Ironically, M. Night Shyamalan boasts about the reality of the musical event, saying: Fun WeekAnd“We did a real concert and that was part of the joy and complexity of it. Josh has a real concert behind him and the extras are reacting to that. It took months and months to think about it with Saleka [his real-life daughter who plays singer Lady Raven] and I analyze who this woman is and what kind of show she's going to put on.”
But despite all the meticulous planning, the final depiction of this very public and chaotic environment looks nothing like a real concert. We might usually chalk it up to Hollywood conventions and just have fun and enjoy the ride, but there are so many Trap is based on this concept that is hard to buy into. This list covers all the weird parts of Lady Raven's concert that confused us.
