Sonic Generations will be removed from digital stores next month, but players will still be able to purchase it.
In a statement posted on the official Sonic the Hedgehog X account on Friday, Sega confirmed that the 2011 game will be removed from stores on September 9, presumably to make way for the remake Sonic X Shadow Generations.
However, it also stated that those who do not own the game will still be able to purchase it through a new package even after it is removed from the range.
Players of the Steam version, which has a small but dedicated modding scene, have also been assured that mod support will remain enabled.
“We're excited to share Sonic X Shadow Generations with you this October and see a new generation appreciate this game as much as we do,” the statement said.
“On September 9, the original Sonic Generations was released will be removed as a standalone title. But we've heard your feedback and want to help preserve the game.
“As a result, Sonic Generations will continue to be available through bundles with other legendary Sonic titles on Steam and Xbox. Existing owners of the title will also still be able to download and play it. Finally, we can confirm that mods on the Steam version are not affected.”
The new package, called the Sonic the Hedgehog Legacy Bundle, includes a number of classic Sonic games for $59.99.
The package contains the following titles:
- Sonic Generations Collection
- Sonic Adventure DX
- Sonic Adventure 2
- Sonic Adventure 2 Battle
- Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode 1
- Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode 2
- Sonic 3D Explosion
- Sonic Spinball
Sonic X Shadow Generations is an updated version of Sonic Generations, including new levels.
In the original game, Sonic and his friends team up with their past selves. The game features two gameplay styles: Classic, which is mostly sideways, and Modern, which features 3D levels.
The new version will include a “complete remaster” of Sonic Generations with “improved graphics and new bonus content” as well as new content featuring Shadow.
