Super-slim E Ink tablet boosts mobile productivity with AI

Hong Kong-based startup Viwoods has integrated AI intelligence into its 10-inch e-note tablet to help users make the most of their ePaper productivity on the go. Voice interaction is available, the AI can summarize blocks of text or take meeting minutes, and even correct grammar.

E Ink tablets like the Remarkable 2 and PocketBook InkPad Eo can be great tools for mobile productivity, especially for those like me who prefer to quickly jot down ideas or read books and documents on an eye-friendly screen.

The AiPaper e-note is just 4.5 mm (0.17 in) thin and weighs just 370 g (13 oz). It features the latest black and white E Ink technology in the Carta 1300 format, and is estimated to offer a faster response time for smoother page turning and less ghosting than its predecessors. The resolution of the screen is 2,560 x 1,920 (300 ppi), and the Mobius display is surrounded by thin bezels on three sides, and the chin houses the touch navigation buttons.

But what really sets this 10.65-inch e-note apart from the rest of the E Ink productivity crowd is its AI intelligence. The built-in algorithmic assistant is up to the task to help analyze material, organize content, search for information, summarize walls of text, improve content and create articles, correct grammar, and even highlight passages or phrases it deems important in text.

Voice interaction is also available with “advanced AI Q&A” and research/writing assistance. AI can also capture meeting minutes with a single click, which can then be shared with team members via file transfer. And screen casting allows the user to share ideas directly to a connected display.

Like other e-notes on the market, the device has a bunch of templates to streamline your productivity flow, and there’s the ability to plan tasks, create to-do lists, etc. There’s an option to convert handwriting to text, convert as you type, choose a scribble block, or take a full page at a time — either way, this AI-powered feature is expected to deliver “unparalleled accuracy.”

People can also use the included stylus pen to sign documents. This pen comes with 4,096 levels of pressure, a “long-lasting tip” (replacement tips are included in the box), and an integrated eraser function. A feature has been added to sync documents with other devices, and it will only store such documents for 24 hours before they are deleted as a security measure (there's probably an override for those who want to continue working on them). Other security measures include fingerprint scanning and password protection for the lock screen or at the individual document level.

Built-in AI can help search through walls of text and summarize, refine or create full articles, drawing the user's attention to key phrases for further research, there's also voice interaction and the device can keep meeting minutes

Inside the thin panel sits an octa-core processor brains, backed by 4GB of low-power RAM and 128GB of internal storage, with some apps pre-installed and more to come as development continues. It likely runs Android 13 with access to the Play Store for third-party app downloads.

The device's 4,100-mAh Li-ion battery will give you about a week of use (based on 2 hours of use per day), or a month on standby. And rounding out the basic features are Bluetooth 5.0 and 802.11ac Wi-Fi for wireless connectivity. Notable omissions include a built-in display light and external storage via SD media.

To get its AiPaper e-note into production, Viwoods has launched on Kickstarter. Pledges for the 10-inch E Ink tablet start at $489, but there’s also an 8.2-inch Mini variant as part of the already-funded campaign. The usual crowdfunding caveats apply, but if all goes as planned, shipping is expected to start in October. There’s more in the video below.
