The director of the Final Fantasy 7 remake is convinced that the third part will be one of the best video games of all time.
At an event during a Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth exhibition currently taking place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, director Naoki Hamaguchi said that Square Enix is working on the third installment in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy.
“The development team is working hard right now and we will make the game something that exceeds all your expectations of the game,” Hamaguchi said through an interpreter.
“I am absolutely convinced that the third game in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake series will once again be one of the most beloved and popular games in the entire history of video games.”
During the presentation, Hamaguchi and the game's producer, Yoshinori Kitase, also explained how the third game builds on its two predecessors in terms of both content and gameplay improvements.
“We've now done all the groundwork, all the story that was built through Remake and Rebirth,” Hamaguchi said. “And now we're in a great position so all the fans are excited and anticipating how the story ends and where it goes from here.”
Kitase added: “We really listened carefully and took into account all the feedback on the first two games in the series. All of that learning will be reflected in the third game, so it will be exactly what fans are looking for.
“We hope you can look forward to the new synergy we are developing, the fusion of nostalgia and new innovation that will create something very special.
“We're really looking forward to a date in the future when we can reveal more about what the third game will look like. But I can promise right now that it will be a game that perfectly reflects all the passion fans have for Final Fantasy 7. So look forward to great things.”
The first two parts of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake were released in 2020 and 2024, so part 3 will probably be a few years away.
In VGC's review of the second part, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, it is described as “an excellent role-playing game with some of the best characters in gaming canon”.
“While some open-world content grazes on the fringes and the game's main narrative remains a bit bland, the time spent with Aerith, Tifa, and the gang makes the game a thoroughly entertaining road trip that will keep you hooked for hundreds of hours,” we wrote.
