The remake of Silent Hill 2 also seems to convince fans who were previously skeptical about the quality of the game.
A VGC analysis of the trailer's likes and dislikes on YouTube suggests that the game, which has divided opinions for some time, is now gaining positive momentum, just seven weeks before its October 8 release.
When Bloober Team's remake was first announced, the first teaser trailer was extremely well-received, with YouTube viewers giving it 314,000 likes but only 8,200 likes (around 97% positive).
However, the release of an infamous “Combat Reveal Trailer” in January prompted some fans to check out the game, which only earned it 59% likes.
Reactions to the trailer were so divided that Bloober Team president Piotr Babieno said the trailer “did not reflect the spirit of the game.” He said Konami was responsible for the marketing and promised: “When players see the real gameplay, the real game, they will judge it very differently.”
These promises did nothing to stop the game's decline, and when another 13-minute gameplay trailer was released in May, the likes to dislikes ratio was even lower at 53%.
Today, however, it seems that Bloober Team has turned things around. A new story trailer released today currently has 17,932 likes and just 668 dislikes, for an overall rating of 96%.
While some might say the numbers simply suggest the game's story trailers are better than the gameplay, VGC's own 27-minute gameplay footage currently has a 97% positive rating.
The Silent Hill 2 remake will be released on October 8th for PS5 and PC.
According to VGC's new hands-on preview of Silent Hill 2, the game is reminiscent of the recent remakes of Capcom's Resident Evil games.
“Silent Hill 2 is vital to the health of the series and feels like exactly the kind of shot in the arm that will bring the series back into fashion,” we wrote.
“Comparisons to the Resident Evil remake will probably be inevitable, but is that a bad thing when Capcom's recent efforts have been as influential in the modern survival horror genre as Resident Evil and Silent Hill were in the genre's early days?”
